When I came back from getting my PhD, I was sent to Baghdad to conduct the Iraqi campaign progress review. We were just astounded by the lack of preparation from everybody's standpoint for this huge international undertaking. That was a really powerful lesson for me. You don't have to know everything in the world, but for the things that you're responsible for, you can't assume anything away. It got me thinking about what I wanted to do afterwards when I retired - because couldn't stay uniform forever.
