The dimensional modeling practice largely refers to the star and snowflake schema versus the data vaultsschema. It's typically third normal form in transactional databases. And as far as that actual exercise of defining these dimensional models and figuring out what are the actual attributes and dimensions, that can be a very complex and time consuming process.

Architectural decisions are all based on certain constraints and a desire to optimize for different outcomes. In data systems one of the core architectural exercises is data modeling, which can have significant impacts on what is and is not possible for downstream use cases. By incorporating column-level lineage in the data modeling process it encourages a more robust and well-informed design.
