The Tension Between Christians and Jews in the Middle Ages
In the early 15th century, a series of debates between Jews and Christians took place in Spain. At these sessions, Jewish rabbis had the opportunity to defend their religion against a particularly knowledgeable opponent. Hironimo de Santa Fe knew his Talmud well, so he was able to argue that statements in this rabbinic texts proved that the Messiah had already appeared. Most of the rabbis who debated with Hironimo eventually capitulated, signing a document abandoning the authority of the Talmud.
