Any apology can't be sincere or meaningful unless it stems from some understanding of what's happened. That's why Shashitaro's books were such eye-opinars to many because they were unaware of these sort of shared histories. We're in a process as a country now of being more honest with ourselves and trying to understand more about our history. But I think it's very, very much still in its early stages, extraordinary. And it has a long way to go before apologies and all the other things can be anything like sincere.
