How Adults Can Learn a Foreign Language More Effectively Than Children

Mature adults can learn a foreign language well enough through intensive language study to do things in the language almost as well as native speakers. Diane Larsen Freeman estimates that young children spend 12,000 to 15,000 hours learning their native languages. At FSI at the Foreign Services Institute, adult students in a 44 week language program spend 1,100 hours in training to achieve a highly significant proficiency level in a new language. It's very difficult to find adults who have accents which are basically exactly on point.
