i spent a year and a half in mexico, which is home to the largest number of american ex pasto. i was really deep into that phenomenon, and observing how people within this community had animosities towards each other. When you're a foreigner abroad and you see another foreigner, they sometimes hold up a mirror to you - you don't want to see how foreign you look. I think there can be a certain ferocity of judgment that's unique too. Trot like fellow travellers and people who are living abroad who the same origin point or or home country.
