Quantum Field Theory - The Definition of Empty Space

When physicists talk about empty space, usually what they mean is the vacuum of a quanta mechanical theory. In particular, it is the lowest energy state in a quantum field theory. If you were in empty space, you don't need to worry that suddenly particles are going to pop into existence. They happen under the right circumstances. This is what frank woolcheck had in mind when he said, maybe nothing is unstable.
