Since Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999, the People's Democratic Party won repeated elections. The PDP oversaw a period of some degree of economic growth as well as continued privatization and basically pushing forward the project of structural adjustment that commenced in the 80s. And right before it was challenged by the EPC on the Buhari, it attempted to remove the fuel subsidy, which in some ways has been the last kind of crucial instrument of state investment in the economy.
