The American Conservatism That Loves Xi Jinping
The first layer is when Trump says, oh, she is brilliant, which he obviously is. He's praising his opponent in the way that a guy who gets in a street fight brags about how big the other guy was. And the fact that I beat him means that I'm even bigger and I're even more talented and I'm even more brilliant. So that's obviously what he's doing here. But at a deeper level, there is a strain of American conservatism that while it doesn't love Xi Jinping, it has a grudging kind of admiration and respect for Xi Jinping.
