The Importance of J. Edgar Hoover in American History

J. Edgar Hoover was the long time director of the FBI, turned it into an American institution and built it in his own image. There's been a period right now of historians reassessing him as this massive figure across American life. He wasn't born again; he didn't talk about his personal relationship with Jesus. This is important to Christianity today and the history of evangelicalism because he very much preaches patriotic deism.
