The Islamic system in Iran has a monopoly on the levers of power and very little compunction about using absolute force to sustain its rule. We know from the 2009 protests over what was perceived widely perceived as a rigged re-election for then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the regime will put down even significant social movements. And right now I think we see violence but it can get a whole lot worse and the crackdown is likely to only intensify if in fact the uprising continues.
