Tectonic pressure started forcing oil up to the surface of the earth. It pooled in these small lakes in what is now Los Angeles. Prehistoric animals would wade in and get stuck. They couldn't escape and their bones were perfectly preserved by the oil. There's a saber tooth tiger that's thought to be 44,000 years old or a coyote that's 46,000 yearsold.
