The Pelopnesians had sent for Strombikites in the Hellespont to come down with his 26 ships that he had taken previously from Kios to Abidos. The newly reinforced Athenian fleet of now 108 ships, in turn, sailed out against the 112 of the Pelopneans. Despite the fact that they were almost even in terms of numbers, Asciakus now declined to engage and so the Athenians sailed back to Samos, and the Pelopnesia went back to Melidas. In spite of their internal difficulties, the Athenians managed to restore the balance of power to what it had been the previous winter.
