How Did Freud's Propaganda Work?
Freud was the first modern thinker to disagree with Enlightenment's claim that humans are rational. He said we're run by what he called our unconscious drives, a kind of automatic impulse in our body. Ironically, as Freud was Jewish, the first power brokers to take his ideas seriously were the Nazis who used his view of human nature to design their propaganda apparatus. After the war, it was Freud's nephew, Edward Bernays, who brought his uncle's ideas to Madison Avenue.
