The History of the Contiki Expedition
Tore Hiredall and his crew set sail from South America on April 28, 1947. They were towed 50 miles out to sea just to avoid any coastal maritime traffic. The voyage finally came to an end when they beached themselves on the rare Oria Atoll in the Tuomotu Islands. In 1948 he published a book, The Contiki Expedition, by raft across the south seas. It has been translated into 70 languages and sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. A documentary film about the Contiki Expedition won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1951.
