The Scaling Law and the Problem We Have to Face
We are unbelievably efficient, but we are extraordinarily inefficient and profligate as social human beings. If you add all that together for the social metabolic rate, that's not just little less than 100 watts, it's 11,000 watts,. It's equivalent to about a dozen elephants, or about three quarters of a blue whale. There are seven and a half billion of us on this planet, all wanting to be like us, in one form or another. This is the problem that we have, and this is the problem we have to face, and I'm not going to talk about any solutions.
