Putrefaction - The Fifth Stage of Death
Man has always been a homuncules in the figurative sense and a literal sense, if you want to believe the stories of creation. In metamorphosis, ovid says that bees come from rotting cattle. Wafts come from horses, scorpions from crab shells, snakes from decomposing spinal cords, and perhaps mice from slime. And varying subjects that are put through different putr levels of putrefaction make different things. This is aristotilian thought, and this is what inspired all these alchemists of their time.
