Herman Melville actually went out on a whale. He broke Moby Dick from 100% experience. A lot of guys came back and found that they had been paid either the equivalent of pennies a day or they would be hundreds of dollars in debt to the whaling company. Sailors were extremely superstitious. Extremely, yes. The Essex was considered a lucky ship because it had lasted through so many voyages.
