A Brief History of the French Revolution

In normal times, urban workers spent somewhere between 40 to 60 % of their income on bread alone. Despite minister turgo's attempts to introduce reform in the early years of the reign of louis the sixteenth, urban workers had few rights granted to them by law. It's these skilled laborers and artisans that make up the famous sancoulots of the french revolution. And this group will be extremely important in determining its direction and its radicalism. Their grievances with the old regime were not primarily economic in nature. In the last few decades, the ability of the third's upper crust to climb the social ladder had been inhibited.
