The most important thing was to follow the law. And the law said there must be a trial. So the court was convened outdoors in the high city square for the people of basl to watch. The judge promised to weigh impartially the arguments presented, even though no one doubted the circumstances or the outcome. It didn't mat that the suspect's guilt was plain to see and everyone knew what he had done.
