The Roman Empire - A Brief History
Everything resembling a state broke down from the british isles to the eastern mediterranean. Literacy almost disappeared the church. Majority of ancient texts, 90 % by some estimates, were lost forever. In short, intellectual life did not exactly flourish in latin europe. The franks set off the first organized step in reviving the lost literary culture of antiquity.
