The fbi and department of homeland security had a lot of raw intelligence about the possibility of violence in washington, d c. Usually federal agencies would take that lgence and produce a threat assessment then send it out to local law enforcement so they could prepare for what was coming. In the weeks before january sixth, officials npr talked to could not explain why this wasn't done. As many as 20 thousand national guard troops are expected to be deployed on joe byden's inauguration day.
