There are a lot of different intersecting stories, and one of the things that's quite deliberate but also frustrating for many readers. The book actually begins about a year after it ends, in a sense, and you get about ten pages of Hal a year later,. And then that's it, you never really... So at the very least, it's not a traditional novel in terms of the way it deals with story, I think it's safe to say.
