The Trade Deficit and Social Security
There's a chapter on the trade deficit that asks us if we really want to think about trade deficits as evidence of quote unquote losing it trade. The challenge really comes down to jobs and the impact on communities and industries, all of that is relevant. Even Alan Greenspan said under oath in testimony before Congress that there's nothing to prevent the federal government from creating as much money as it wants and paying it to someone. It cannot be a question of affordability or ability to make those payments to future retirees.
