The Smoking Gun Was Shooting Blanks
A tape recording called the smoking gun led to Nixon's ouster. It was recorded shortly after he broke into a bank in 1972. On it, bob hollman asks for permission not to interview two key members of his campaign team. John dene says that Bob Hollman wanted to prevent disclosure of names of prominent democrats who had given him money. The lawyers didn't know this and thought they were trying to shut down an fbi investigation - which is obstruction of justice.
