The Carbon Loophole to a Full Faith and Credit Clause
DOMA was an attempt to a sort of carbon loophole to a full faith and credit clause so that other states wouldn't have to recognize gay marriages. The federal government would not acknowledge those marriages as legitimate for taxation purposes mostly. Vermont became the first state in the country to legalize civil unions between same sex partners, but it just kind of recreated the recognition problem on another level.
