Spike Lee cast Amir Ali Sayeed after watching him in a shapel show sketch. Marcin Jean Kurtz was cast because she played a bank robbery hostage named Miriam in Dog Day afternoon. Denzel turned down the Clive Owen part because he didn't like that the character was always in disguise.
