The Life and Times of Vander Clyde Broadway
In 1946, he was hired to stage a circus finale in Around the World. That was a musical theater project written by Orson Welles with music by Cole Porter. The play was based on Jules Verne's book Around the World in 80 Days. Barbette was also the obvious choice to train actor Gilbert Roland for the movie Big Circus. This was in 1959.
Vander Clyde Broadway went by a few different names in his life, but Barbette is the one he got famous with. He was a female impersonator from Texas who became the toast of Paris in the 1920s.
