A new book by Julian Gewitts brings Jad Siang back to prominence in Chinese history. He was the Prime Minister of China who stood with students in Tiananmen Square, before being whisked off into house arrest for the rest of his life. It does make you wonder whether there were other paths possible for China at that point, and whether there still are other paths possible. We've seen a lot of milestones this year which is looking itself at 2022 - we can all hope that maybe China will go back to being more open than it was in the 1980s.
