Coaching Coaches

In his new book, Coach of the Year: The Power Of Empowering Your Players is published by Hodder & Stoughton at £16.99 (Penguin Books) Coaches are encouraged to set high expectations for their players but must not hold on too tightly or they will lose influence and become bad leaders. To support standards in a team it's important that every member of the coaching staff plays an active role - even if only one person does so. It can be as simple as saying 'here is the line' rather than just setting boundaries which could lead to poor behaviour. A coach should also empower all members of the football squad including captains who need to take some responsibility
