The Underground River of Hope
A biblical definition of hope is more close to the expectation of coming good based on the character and promises of God. Dr. Howard Thurman wrote a book in 1949 called Jesus and the Disinheranted which was essentially a theology of suffering and hope from the life of Jesus that shed light on the plight of African American people living through segregation. Martin Luther King Jr. kept this book on his person in his pocket through every significant march and moment that we read about in history. Such courage is an underground river flowing far beneath the shifting events of one's experience keeping alive a thousand little springs of action, he says.
