The American Optimist

I think that we are especially Americans, right? We are naturally optimistic. Europeans make fun of us for the unbridled optimism. And I think that's been changing over the past few years. In South Africa, there was a truth and reconciliation commission. Even well-meaning presidents like Jimmy Carter have never felt able to begin a conversation about the original sin of America's founding. That's the first step that has to happen.
