The American Indian Plains Culture Area

The most common dwelling for plains indians was the cone shaped teepee, a bison skin tent that could be folded up and carried anywhere. The peoples of the southwest culture area lived in the vast desert region present day arizona, new mexico, along with parts of colorado, utah, texas. After european contact, some great basin groups got horses and formed equestrian hunting and raiding bands similar to the ones we associate with the great plains tribes. Next up is california. Area had more people and estimatedt 300 thousand in the mid sixteenth century than any other. Estimated a hundred different tribes and groups spoke more than 200 different dialects
