The US National Ignition Facility Made History on December 5th
The US National Ignition Facility, a government lab in Livermore, California made history on December 5th when its scientists achieved a fusion reaction that produced more energy than it consumed. The process occurs when a pair of hydrogen atoms undergo forced collision, fusing together and unleashing an enormous amount of energy. Scientists say that this historic first step now means that we're mere decades away from solving the world's energy problems with a single technology that emits zero greenhouse gas emissions. Along with clean energy, the fusion experiment has strong implications for the US military. It could also lead to safer testing of modern nuclear weapons.
