Flaxseed has more ALA per calorie than any other non-supplement plant food. The American Heart Association recommends consuming 1,000 milligrams of DHA plus EPA per day for people with heart disease. In healthy young women, the conversion rates are slightly higher, which is thought to be the result of higher estrogen levels. Women can convert approximately 21% of ALA to EPA and 9% of ALa to DHA.
