Going to a nonchain is not necessarily more expensive. If you're going to an equivalent level of restaurant, I don't think there's a price point difference. Some local restaurants are experimenting with paying staff by the meal and charging no tipping. It's a very interesting concept, but it's only been local establishments that have done so.
