Haitian Republicans needed someone within the halls of power in Paris to hold the line against this resurgence of the big white planters. Governor LaVoe was the only person in Haiti who really fit the bill, and so the two friends said goodbye. This left a vacancy for the position of governor, and that vacancy was filled by a familiar figure. Sontenax saw himself as the savior of the black race. Quite literally, he talked about himself in those terms.
