There's a lot in Xi Jinping's China and the Communist Party that would be familiar if a Mandarin official did a rip van Winkle for 300 years. One party rule, one ideology monopoly, one autocrad are shared features between the communist era and the imperial era. I do have one chapter that talks about one big difference and that difference has to do with succession. The imperial system had a more stable succession arrangement.
