CHAPTER

The History of the Tooth Fairy

The tooth fairy took off at the tail end of the Great Depression, when families would have been able to afford to shell out for a tooth. In 1940, Disney released Pinocchio, in which the blue fairy becomes a full-sized blonde woman with wings and a sparkly blue gown. She was followed by Cinderella's fairy godmother, and in 1953, Disney's animated Peter Pan. By the 1960s, the tooth fairy was just about as established as it is now; 25% of people thought she was male.
