Homer's Reconstruction of the 4th of July

Dressing for the Carnival is a painting which he originally called Sketch the 4th of July in Virginia. The picture depicts Black man being dressed in an unusual costume. It's a performance of Afro-Caribbean dance called Junkanoo, which was performed in only one place that we know of in the United States during this period.
