The Importance of Having a Community

If you don't have a community, you are fully dependent on your marketing and PR teams. The thing about communities is that if you've got a community of people who are really passionate about what you're doing, they can actually play a significant role in helping you. When I was at Canonical, we decided to build a phone platform similar to Android. We didn't have any of the typical apps. So we had this bright idea: Why don't we ask our community members to build them? And within six months, all of those apps were built. They produced what would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce if we would have paid people to do it.
