The Statue of Liberty

A statue of the Marquis de Lafayette was meant to thank New York specifically for its financial help to France during the recent war there. A committee called the Union Franco-American formed when Bertoldi was 40 years old with the express purpose of furthering the Statue of Liberty project. There was a public appeal for funds in late September of 1875 and they seriously had the goal of getting the statue delivered to the United States by July of 1876.
