The Multi Party System in American Politics
The reason that we had what you describe as the multi party system in the past, it's partially about geography and partialy about the biggest issue in american politics. So in the twentieth century, you could divide the democratic party into two northern democrats southern democrats. But now, after the johnson administration and the passage of the civil rights act, you end up with a situation where the parties are polarized by identity,. Every one who is racially conservative, and white is the nice terminology, right? Is a republican now, pretty much. And races the big issue.
