Voltaire's interest in history was to show how men were much the same in most ages, and how the same causes produced the same effects. The purpose of history is not simply curiosity about what happened in the past but a collection of data upon which general propositions can be constructed. That is a most unhistorical possible attitude which can be taken towards history.
