The Harlem Arts Scene in the 19th Century
Madam walker established an enviable business empire, built in part on the acceptance by black women that their own hair was not desirable. She built a town house designed by a black architect that was as good as any east side mansion. It was demolished without any protest or other remark to accommodate new york's most important centre for black studies. Schomberg is a great example of a flourishing literary scene that's already beginning here in the 19 teens, of course.
