Ralph Bass was in charge of A&R for Savoy Records at the time. He saw Johnny Otis performing live, and decided to get him a record deal. The contract only specified a 1% royalty, but Lubinsky promised he'd triple it after his first hit with Savoy. Like many of Lubinsky's promises, this proved to be false.
