The word comes from a the greek, originally, paragraphos, which means written beside. Originally that's this line, just like a dash in the margin. And overtime it changes into these letters you're talking about, like the k or the c and in latin manuscripts. Then eventually the c gets thes bars and it becomes the pillcrow. But i think this is all originally derived from this paragrapha marker, just the dash in themargin says, something's different now.
