The Ancient Use of Willow as a Pain Reliever
The ancient use of willow as a pain reliever has ample support throughout the ancient world. It was also used by people living in Southern Africa and by Native Americans before Columbus. By around 200 CE, willow was basically as common a remedy as aspirin is today. But then, mysteriously, willow just kind of falls by the wayside in much of Europe. Its importance as a medicinal plant there wouldn't be recognized again until the 1700s.
