In Negro land that when Negroes are your familiars their faces voices bodies are the landscape of your everyday life. The shock comes when a person appears from that other wider world and suddenly marks you as the oddity or scar this unpleasant anomaly right yes exactly something at best to be scrutinized and study at worst exactly to be avoided by the time I entered white publishing there were political and sociological black precedents for that.
