Hugh Vericher said don't trouble yourself with this. And don't tell anyone else or they'll be burdened too. Gwendolyn Erme's ardent response was in itself a pledge of discretion. They appeared to have caught instinctively at Vericher's high idea of enjoyment. Their intellectual pride did not make them indifferent to any further light I might throw on the affair they had in hand. The importance they attached to it was irritating, and quite invenomed my doubts.
